The guys will relate to this one during harvest time, it's very evocative, a man alone on a tractor in a vast field.

Because of the new book I have listened to The Mary Ellen Carter several times and it's a fun song to listen to, but these few lines are the best of that song and really have the most meaning for me:

And you, to whom adversity has dealt the final blow
With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go
Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain
And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again.

Thanks for all these music shares.  He really has some great songs.  His brother Garnet Rogers also does songs very much like this (and sounds a bit like him, to me).  So if this music has appeal to you, try him as well.

I saw Northwest Passage linked somewhere and was like "wait? Stan Rogers... isn't that from FCR?" Anyway long story short I'm now just listening to it on repeat and wanting to cry (in the good way? It's so moving... and the way he says 'savage' just gets me).

That was the first song of his I ever heard Elizabeth, it was on tv and grabbed my attention with both hands. Stan Rogers' performances are such a great blend of poetry and voice expression. The poetry of Bluenose 'see her bow rise free of mother sea' and 'the rich men's toys are the foster boys with their token bit of cod - they snapped their spars and strained to pass her by'. Just gems of sound and word music.

Northwest Passage is still probably my favourite of all his songs.

My favourite, so far.

Have to think of Flynn singing this to Riley every time I hear it. Not easy to do, singing this very softly.

I've been a fan of Stan Rogers for more than 20 years, when a local group here in Maine (Schooner Fare) sang many of his songs - including Barrett's Privateers and Mary Ellen Carter.  When I read Three Traders for the first time, and the men gathered for Gam Saan's funeral sang it, I thought it was the perfect 'theme song' for David.  It seemed like fate when I discovered Stan Rogers songs were such an important part of  FCR.  I loved the songs in the 80's, and love them still.
