Music thread - Beautiful, but a little bit sad

Post by hellspark72 on Fri Jul 01, 2016 8:11 pm

Hi,

is there room for a little melancholy at this party?

This song always reminds me of the Ranch and the sanctuary that Philip and David created.

Such simple lyrics and melody, sung by a Lesbian woman, so I find it rather poignant.

It's in Dutch, so here is a loose translation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5uvsEs79hM

Als de oorlog komt, [When the war comes]
En als ik dan moet schuilen, [And if I have to hide]
Mag ik dan bij jou? [Can I come to you?]
Als er een clubje komt, [And when a group comes]
Waar ik niet bij wil horen, [To which I don't want to belong]
Mag ik dan bij jou? [Can I come to you?]
Als er een regel komt [When a rule is established]
Waar ik niet aan voldoen kan [Which I cannot meet]
Mag ik dan bij jou? [Can I come to you?]
En als ik iets moet zijn, [And if I have to be something]
Wat ik nooit geweest ben, [That I've never been]
Mag ik dan bij jou? [Can I come to you?]

Mag ik dan bij jou schuilen, [Can I come hide with you]
Als het nergens anders kan? [If I have nowhere else to go?]
En als ik moet huilen, [And if I have to cry]
Droog jij m’n tranen dan? [Will you dry my tears?]
Want als ik bij jou mag, ['Cause if I can come to you,]
Mag jij altijd bij mij. [You can always come to me]
Kom wanneer je wilt, [Come whenever you want]
Ik hou een kamer voor je vrij. [I'll keep a room for you]

Als het onweer komt,  [When the thunder storm comes]
En als ik dan bang ben, [And if I am scared]
Mag ik dan bij jou?  [Can I come to you?]
Als de avond valt, [When the night falls]
En ’t is mij te donker,  [and it's too dark for me]
Mag ik dan bij jou?  [Can I come to you?]
Als de lente komt, [When Spring comes]
En als ik dan verliefd ben [And if I'm in love]
Mag ik dan bij jou?  [Can I come to you?]
Als de liefde komt, [When love comes]
En ik weet het zeker, [And I am certain]

Als het einde komt, [When the end comes]
En als ik dan bang ben, [And I am alone]
Mag ik dan bij jou?  [Can I come to you?]
Als het einde komt, [When the end comes]
En als ik dan bang ben, [And I am alone]
Mag ik dan bij jou?  [Can I come to you?]

I like the idea of a bit of melancholy, Patricia.   There's many touching, even a bit sad, parts in these stories.

I find this one from Jason Mraz a bit sad in a way.   Jason Mraz, I Won't Give Up

Glad you like the idea, Dizzy. Don't want to bring the mood down, but I find the best parties are the ones where there is room for meaningful discussions.

And you are right there are many touching parts in the stories (actually I usually bawl my eyes out at least once every book when reading the main novels, I have given up trying to read them in public - especially Silver Bullet Ranch).

This one I listened to over and over while we were writing SB Ranch - the Jason Mraz was Rolf's inspiration for Everest!

Oh Ranger, I love this, Already There, is one of the most touching ones.

This video is one of my favorites.  And has special meaning for me right now as my soldier son is leaving "the sandbox" and coming home on July 4th.   Home safe and sound.

Peace to you,

I don't think you bring the mood down at all.  And I can't read Luathe/Roger without gulping quite hard.  And that Roger is home on the ranch now?  How can you not tear up just a little?

I'm an air force brat. When I was young, I'm Already There came up on the radio--I always, always used to relate it to my dad. Applying it to the ranch makes so much sense as well.

I don't know if this exactly equates to "melancholy" but Somewhere Only We Know by Keane is something I definitely apply to ranch life.

This song reminds me of my twin sister who died when we where 22. Even after all these years she is still missing in my life.
Reminds me of Luath talking about Roger during the hike as well.
