Re: The Around the World Thread
Maine has always held a fascination for me. Every time there was an ice-breaker for a class or club or whatever, and we were asked “if you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?” I always answered Maine. When we knew mom was going to pass away, she turned to me and said “let’s make death chase me”. So we went to Maine! It took us almost a month to drive there, but it was the best time!
I still love Maine and want to go back. I love, love, love the beaches there. Here are a couple pictures from one of the beaches we visited.

Oregon is actually a place I’d love to go, too - and Washington state, which is just next door - but the place I have really been dying to go to is Norway! I want to see the fjords!

I’d also like to add this thread is so cool, considering we are all scattered across the world. Can’t wait to hear more from everyone!

Re: The Around the World Thread
Too many beautiful places to chose from! The one I have recently been to is this Mugahl era tomb (don't be fooled, all Mughal era tombs actually look like castles). Its built using red sandstone and you can actually climb up the structure and walk through its hallways. There's many nooks and corners, beautiful windows and pillars.
It called Humayun's Tomb in Delhi. I think the only other rival this place has is the Taj, and it still does not feel as serene as this structure does.

I had a wonderful time walking Westray in the Orkney Islands quite a few years ago. It was a much needed respite and truly a great memory. I don't often take photos when I travel, I'm afraid. But I got to see these for the first time:

Closer to home is Cradle Mountain in Tasmania's Lake St Clair National Park. It's a hike and it's worth every step.

Ok, that's an excellent picture and I think this is my new favorite bird (used to be the seagull). It does look like a penguin - doesn't it!@Trisha Louise wrote:Puffins. Masses of them roost on the cliffs. If penguins could fly, they'd be puffins I think.

Oh, how beautiful, @Hayjude!! I love the contrast of seeing such a warm blue sky and leaves on the trees as you guys are in summer. Then the cold, grey, cloudy sky here with the bare, stark branches of the trees here in winter.
I’m just so excited that so many are sharing trees. It’s like we are traveling the world through FCR. What a magical, wonderful thing this is.

Hmmm, I want a Puffin. I want Trisha to send me one in the mail. But, the cats sitting on my lap are looking at the picture and licking their lips. So, Malcolm (my Puffin's name) might be best staying on an Australian cliff. <big sigh>@Trisha Louise wrote:Puffins. Masses of them roost on the cliffs. I want to retire to Victoria, British Colombia. Own a little bed and breakfast and regularly have tea at the Butchart Gardens and Empress Hotel.

It's a beautiful place. The Empress is magnificent though I wish I had gone inside. I travelled north from there up the coast to Tofino and stayed at the most wonderful timber-rich hostel. There were whales just off the shore and on the spur of the moment I tried my hand at sea kayaking. Thank you for the reminder of a great trip.

I can imagine Riley, Tom & Jake loving this place and probably climbing one of the falls.
Litchfield is 130km from Darwin.

Litchfield Park is beautiful, @Zicat. I can’t imagine living so close to such beautiful scenery. The Magnetic Termite Mounds are kind of fascinating.
I’ve been trying to play with long exposure to get a good waterfall picture. I *think* I’ve got a small start on figuring it out. Now, I need to go Florence Falls in your park.

Re: The Around the World Thread
The Gaspe Peninsula stole my heart many years ago when we took the family up there one summer on a whim. We'd been to Quebec, and the Maritime provinces, but had never heard a word about the lovely peninsula along the St Lawrence River. It was a most magical trip that included gorgeous artwork, a hike at Mont Joli, caribou in the mist, French cafes, a magnificent wind turbine, kayaking in the ocean at the mouth of the river, and whales!! Not only did we see whales right from our campsite, but a Minke surfaced about 50' from our kayak!

Dizzy, look up Marcel Gagnon's work in the Gaspe Peninsula. Some of his sculptures are in the water and, as the tide comes up, they change in appearance. It is quite stunning!

Thank you Dee. There are so many places to visit and so much to do any time of the week. I'm less then 20 minutes from the beaches, a half hour from the mountains, and the Manning River river is a 5 minute walk away. I tell everyone I talk to that I live in the most beautiful part of Australia.

I don’t have pictures of it at the moment but The Great Ocean Road along the south coast of Victoria and South Australia also has some magnificent rock formations as well. I’ve driven along parts of it years ago. Sadly some are being eroded and washed away.

I have been near here but not this exact park. I'd like to see it someday. Haven't spent much time anywhere you can actually see the night sky, too much light pollution. The last two times I was in the area it was over cast.

Re: The Around the World Thread
I was very lucky to have seen the solar eclipse at Charleston SC last August. Absolute silence as me and hundreds of others gazed skywards. We didn’t take any pictures as we were too busy gawping. It was 2 minutes of utter magic.
I found this amazing picture taken by NASA of the International Space Station transiting the sun during the eclipse. Look closely at the sun spots one of them has protruding solar arrays.

After Charleston we travelled on to Savannah Georgia. There is a museum dedicated to the ‘Mighty Eighth Air Force’ just outside the city in a small town called Pooler. There is a connection between the Village I live in and the Eighth Air Force. In late August 1944 there was a storm over the village which tragically brought down a B-24 Liberator crashing into the centre of the village. It landed on top of a primary school killing in total 61 people including all except three of the children in the infant department of the school (5-7year olds).
The museum has a memorial garden dedicated to the people who died so when we arrived we explained that we were from the village and wanted to see the memorial, a lady came rushing over to speak to us, she was one of the museum volunteers. The day before, 23rd August, they had been visited by one of the survivors. She was 5 at the time of the tragedy. The museum lady had missed her visit and wanted us to pass on her details to the survivor so she could stay in contact. She had met her on previous visits to the museum. She showed us a copy of the local newspaper that had recorded her visit.
We contacted my mother in law and asked if she could find the lady’s address and through her network of old ladies she found her details. We went to see her when we returned from our holiday, she didn’t know anything about our visit and was surprised to see two strangers on her doorstep. We explained ourselves and the circumstances and she invited us in. She’s a feisty old lady and we spent two hours talking to her. She showed us a photograph album she had kept including a picture of herself three days after the disaster covered in bandages as much of her body had been burned. She told us that she spent about 18 months altogether in hospital, first at the American airbase, then in Manchester. She was amazing and we shared stories of holidays in America. She has our details and said she’d like to keep in touch. I said that if she ever needed a companion on one of her travels and I was available that I’d accompany her!
I have so many new and wonderful places to add to my bucket list. There has always been one destination at the top and that is the International Space Station, alas that ship has now sailed and in all honesty, I’ve never really been astronaut material but in your dreams the sky’s the limit!

As I trekked through Google last night, I tripped over Marcel Gagnon, work. I stayed up way too late looking at the pictures of his art. This was one of the pictures I saved as it fascinates me. And this is a place I think is a realistic place for me and Neanderthal to maybe go visit one day.
Again, thank you, @Nonni and everyone. I’m so enjoying traveling through everyone’s posts.

Re: The Around the World Thread
You are quite welcome, Dizzy. Did you come across any pictures of the figures on rafts? At high tide, the rafts bob about offshore and at low tide they come to rest in various locations along the shore, anchored to the beach. Hope you get to go someday.

Re: The Around the World Thread
I've visited a lot of places and couldn't decide which to share because each had such beautiful places to see. But then I remembered all the lovely pictures my friends from England would send to me. Places they visited - castles, abbeys, cathedrals and I think I would love to go again to England. Perhaps see those buildings and learn the history because I love history, but at the top of the list of things I would do is visit The Broads. I love the water most of all and when Sealark was put out for us to read I fell in love with the idea of going there. And maybe I would even get the courage to rent a boat and see if I could make my way around.
