The Campfire Song Thread

Post by Ranger52899 on Fri Feb 02, 2018 1:49 pm

Well if we're here, we're going to sing. Channel Riley in the shower Wink Its another of the oldest human histories there are, the sharing of songs, oral history and joining in music and rhythm together.

So please teach us any campfire songs you may know! Any and all moods welcomed! (Any links to sung versions to listen to also gratefully received!) No limit on how many you can share, the more the merrier.

If we get a chance to roast hot dogs on the campfire, this is a good song to sing as they cook.

Just a bit of silliness.

Last one, I promise.  We would drive everyone crazy singing this song.   I still sing it just to see a Neanderthal’s eyes roll in exasperation.

This was one of my favorites--normally sung at the end of a campfire with a counselor playing guitar:

Barges

Chorus:
Barges, I would like to go with you,
I would like to sail the ocean blue.
Barges, have you treasures in your hold?
Do you fight with priates brave and bold?

Out of my window looking in the night,
I can see the barges flickering light.
Silently flows the river to the sea,
As the barges go by silently.

Chorus
Out of my window looking in the night,
I can see the barges flickering light.
Starboard shining green and port is shining red,
I can see the barges from my bed.

Chorus
Out of my window looking in the night,
I can see the barges flickering light.
Anchors start to pull and engines start to roar,
As the barges pull away from shore.

Chorus
Out of my window looking in the night,
I can see the barges flickering light.
Stars are brightly lighting up the sky,
As the barges seem to skip right by.

Chorus
Out of my window looking in the night
I can see the barges flickering light.
Taking their cargo out into the sea,
How I wish someday they'd take me.

Chorus
How my heart wants to sail away with you,
As you sail across the ocean blue.
But I must stay beside my window clear,
As the barges sail away from here.

Chorus

Another favorite--you can see I went for the angst-y songs :-) in my teen years:

One Tin Soldier

Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.

On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.

Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.

Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

And "Make New Friends"  which we sang as a round at the end of every campfire I was part of during my 14 years in Girl Scouts and serving at a counselor at Scout Camp.  It always takes me back to sitting on the ground by the lake, with people I knew well, and wishing the night would go on forever as the fire sparked into the darkness.

Make new friends,
but keep the old.
One is silver,
the other is gold.

A circle is round,
it has no end.
That's how long,
I will be your friend.

A fire burns bright,
it warms the heart.
We've been friends,
from the very start.

I loved Barges. (veteran of the Girl Guides).

One of my favourites:

On my honour I will try
There's a duty to be done and I say I
There's a reason here and a reason above
My honour is to try and my duty is love

People don't need to know my name
If I've hurt someone then I'm to blame
If I've helped someone then I've helped me
And that's the way that it should be

I've tucked away a song or two
If you're feeling low there's one for you
If you need a friend then I will come
There's plenty more where I come from

Brownie and Girl Scout Here...

I have something in my pocket
That belongs across my face.
I'm sure you could not guess it
If you guessed a long long while
So, I'll take it out and put it on
It's a great big Brownie Smile

I've never heard of Denny Willis, or the song "The Fox Has Left Its Lair", but I love it! I have tears and a sore tummy from laughing so much. I watched it a few times, but I didn't understand the words, so I googled and found that Denny Willis changed the lyrics to suit the Act.
Still laughing! Thank you, Ranger.

Some of my nieces are in Girl Guides Australia, and this is one of the songs the younger members (formally known as Brownies) sing when they go camping.

Forgot to mention there are more verses to this song, and as the girls get older the sillier it gets. Laughing

Re: The Campfire Song Thread

Post by KateM on Sat Feb 03, 2018 2:02 pm

Okay
As promised
best sung after a few glasses (okay, well one) of Scumble...

The Hedgehog Song

So the lyrics (which some may consider to need an age appropriate warning - and probably suggest it shouldn't be sung till you're at least 40 - though Granny would prefer it wasn't sung at all!!)

Bestiality sure is a fun thing to do
But I have to say this as a warning to you:
With almost all animals, you can have a ball
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are too sharp for a man
They'll give you a pain in the worst place they can
The result I think you'll find will appall:
The hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

Mounting a horse can often be fun
An elephant too; though he weighs half a ton
Even a mouse (though his hole is quite small)
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are so awful thick
You'll end up with naught but a painful prick.
He has an impregnable hole when curled up in a ball,
Hence the hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

Screwing a cow while she goes moo-moo
Will be entertaining to both her and you
Or you might try a tiger, if you have enough gall
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are too sharp for a man
They'll give you a pain in the worst place they can
The result I think you'll find will appall:
The hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

A fish is refreshing, although a bit wet
And a cat or a dog can be more than a pet
Even a giraffe (despite being so tall)
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are so awful thick
You'll end up with naught but a painful prick.
He has an impregnable hole when curled up in a ball,
Hence the hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

You can manage a snake, though its poison might kill
It's amazing how humping a camel will thrill
You can go with a snail if you slow to a crawl
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are too sharp for a man
They'll give you a pain in the worst place they can
The result I think you'll find will appall:
The hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

You can ravish a sloth but it would take all night
With a shark it is faster, but the darned beast might bite
We already mentioned the horse, you may recall
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are so awful thick
You'll end up with naught but a painful prick.
He has an impregnable hole when curled up in a ball,
Hence the hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

You can roger a skunk if you can stand the smell
Or even an oyster, should he let go of his shell
A troll can be rocky if down you should fall
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are too sharp for a man
They'll give you a pain in the worst place they can
The result I think you'll find will appall:
The hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

For slippery fun, you can cornhole an otter
Or pego a pig after parting his trotters
Or tumble a tapir, though the prospect appall
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are so awful thick
You'll end up with naught but a painful prick.
He has an impregnable hole when curled up in a ball,
Hence the hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

For prosimian fun, you can bugger a lemur
To bolster your name as a pervert and schemer
The lemurs cry "Frink!" as a coy mating call
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are too sharp for a man
They'll give you a pain in the worst place they can
The result I think you'll find will appall:
The hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

Antipodean pranks -- you can futter a wombat
Or strive with a 'roo in venereal combat
Or hump a goanna -- go on, do it all
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are so awful thick
You'll end up with naught but a painful prick.
He has an impregnable hole when curled up in a ball,
Hence the hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

A moose is amusing, a squid quite confusing
Or try on a rhino if you fancy a bruising,
Or mountin' a mountain goat (careful, don't fall!)
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are too sharp for a man
They'll give you a pain in the worst place they can
The result I think you'll find will appall:
The hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

You could thrust with a thrush if you fancy a climb,
Or pork a few piglets if you have the time,
A skinhead's pet cat if you don't mind a brawl,
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

The spines on his back are so awful thick
You'll end up with naught but a painful prick.
He has an impregnable hole when curled up in a ball,
Hence the hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

Oh, I’ve not heard this song before, @Ranger52899.   As I listened to it, at the end, I started to think “how sad” until the best line-“but we find the horse and wee small man spreading joy across the land”-I love that!!

The Unicorn Song was one of our travel songs-we’ve sung it all the way across the states and back again.

As a girl guide we used to sing the following but I was never really sure why!

Land of the silver birch, home of the beaver
There where the mighty moose wanders at will
Blue lake and rocky shore, I will return once more
Um didly i dum, um diddly I dum, I

I had a very upright English spinster as Captain so no idea why we sang an american/canadian folk song

Here's one reminiscent of an Aussie camping trip....

There ain’t no flies on us
There ain’t no flies on us
There might be flies on some of you guys
But there ain’t no flies on us

My parents took me camping, they said it would be fun
But the skeeters and the blackflies they kept me on the run
A horsefly bit my shoulder a deerfly bit my knee
I jumped into the water but they’re still after me

There’s bug bites on my ankles and all around my ears
The itchin’ and a-scratchin’ are bringing me to tears
I am slowly going crazy swatting bugs away
Did you ever see a fly in a polka dot tie down by the bay

Some people use repellent while others burn coils
You can plant some citronella or try essential oils
But if the flies are bugging and you just can’t get no rest
The best advice that I can give is pack up, and move West!

The thing that has delighted me the most this weekend, is how many things we all have in common, @BlueStocking.  Of course we all love the ranch and the men on it, but we also have the love of trees and songs that we love.  It makes the distances between all of us seem to disappear.

I have the unicorn song on my phone and listen to it all the time.  Another song that I have on my phone and listen to a lot is the Rainbow Connection.  We kind of have a Ranch Connect.

I’ve not heard this arrangement of the Rainbow Connection!  I’m going to have to go to iTunes and get it!  I have the Kermit the Frog edition and sing it daily at the top of my lungs.  It truly is a great song-“the lovers, the dreamers, and me”

I love musicals and Paint Your Wagon is one of my favorites.   These lyrics of They Call the Wind Mariah just tears at my heart.  You know that kind of loneliness!  “I’m a lost and lonely man without a star to guide me”

Thank you, @Ranger52899, for sharing both of these!!  See, this is what I was talking about!  Who would have thought that there were others who like the Rainbow Connection?

I remember seeing some episodes of Seven Brides For Seven Brother the TV Show, but I can't remember the Musical. The TV Show was my first sighting of Richard Dean Anderson, and I've had a school-girl crush on him since then.

Oh Richard Dean Anderson he is cute. I sort of remember the TV show but didn't recall him from it, I crushed on him during Macgyver and then there is Stargate. The movie is kind of old.

Thank you so much, Missty, for sharing these Links. What awesome dancing. I will definitely have to hire the Seven Brides DVD now. And RDA, is so, so, I'm lost for words. I have all the Stargate DVD's, including Atlantis and Universe. Plus The Macgyver Set Box. I may have to do a re-watch starting with the Movie staring Kurt Russell.  Pity Flynn and the boys don't have a TV, or we could all sit around the fire and watch them together.

I think Flynn watching a musical would be equivalent to him going shopping....

"They're breaking out into song for no reason."

"Don't they know how idiotic it is to dance with an axe?!"

"If it was MY daughter trapped with a bunch of men like that, I'd shovel that snow-covered pass by hand if I had to.  Those fathers just leave them!"

Jasper would probably be silently agreeing with him, and amused at the same time.  Riley would also agree with Flynn's logic, but want to try all the dance moves, and Dale could say a more effective way to raise a barn.  Paul would be telling himself that next time he's just sending them all out to the horses so he can watch in peace.

I can so see that JL. Most of the musicals I like would probably have Flynn complaining about one thing or another. I think they might manage to be good though about it for Paul's sake during most of it. When I rewatched the clip before posting the link I was thinking Paul would approve of the shirts nice bold colors.

I like Stargate Atlantis too. There is some really good Stargate fanfiction. I am very fond of Rodney from the fanfiction. I like snarky intelligent characters.

I love Oaint Your  Wagon Ranger— thanks for sharing as I have not heard the music in a long time.  I am a huge musical fan and have to admit I have watched Seven Brides for Seven Brothers many times!  Clasdic musicals would make Flynn crazy but I bet Oaul would love them!  I have always assumed in my head that if Paul goes to NYC with Dale that Caroline gets them show tickets

My husband’s been known to say that many good movies have been ruined by people suddenly breaking into song...he’d be on Flynn’s side!

I love A Sound of Music, but Hubby swears he will throw out the TV if I watch it. Or he just goes fishing. Some men have no appreciation of good ol' Classic Movies. And I loved Paint Your Wagon too.
I really must find Seven Brides for Seven Brothers as I am now really curious after seeing those You Tube snippets, but yes, I can see Flynn finding something else to do on the Ranch besides sitting in front of a TV watching Musicals.

I've never heard of Newsies. I'm more a Dirty Dancing, or the original Grease type fan.

I’ve seen Newsies. That is a good one too with a big dancing choreography number. Add a link later if they have it on you tube, on my phone at the moment while my computer updates. I liked Seven Little Foys with Bob Hope as well, although it is a product of its time and might not be a lot of people’s cup of tea. Has a lovely tap dancing number with him and James Cagney as George M Cohan.
